“And, you fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).
Perhaps you will remember from yesterday that I said to my dear Karen, “So Honey, I’m going to be writing Daily Prescriptions for the month of March. Give me an idea. What should I write about?” She hardly looked up from what she was doing and of all things, she replied, “Trees and asparagus.” So today, I write about asparagus. Grandma had been living with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren ever since her latest stroke. At supper one night her son-in-law, Stanley, backed himself into a corner by insisting that four-year-old Mikie eat his okra. Mikie and daddy went through twenty minutes of near torture. Grandma held her tongue. After supper as Grandma was washing dishes, a frazzled son-in-law walked into the kitchen. Looking up from the sink, Grandma said, “Asparagus. It was asparagus, Stan. I ruined a complete supper by insisting that my daughter, now your wife, eat her asparagus. After the first bite and seeing how much she hated it, I foolishly didn’t choose my battles very wisely. As a parent you’ll want to choose your battles wisely because there will be many more important things ahead than okra.” Stan hugged his mother-in-law and thanked her for the great advice. How will this affect your parenting? Asparagus! Who would have thought?
For today: In every area of life I need to choose my battles wisely. How about you?
