“And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and He saith unto him, Follow Me. And he arose, and followed him” (Matthew 9:9).
What a day that must have been. Matthew was on duty at his tax collecting station. What appeared to be just another typical day for Matthew turned into quite the life-changing moment for him. The Lord Jesus passed by and simply said to him, “Follow Me.” As Peter and Andrew left their nets (Matthew 4:20) and James and John left their ship (Matthew 4:22), so Matthew now leaves his station. How powerful and precious the call to follow the Lord Jesus. You might not have to leave your present career to follow Him. But don’t exclude that very real possibility. Others have left their careers to follow Him. Are you willing to do the same?
For today: Following Christ is incomparable. “Keep the world but give me Jesus” should be much more than a hymn to be sung!
